“I welcome and support the stance on financial integrity in football outlined by the UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, at the recent UEFA Extraordinary Congress.
For the last 15 years, I have been advocating and championing a new approach to financial integrity in football. We need an international, independent and neutral clearing house for sport-related financial transactions – as the UEFA President is now also rightfully calling for. This is the only way to ensure effective financial integrity in the players’ transfer market and in other critical areas.
Alongside this, we also need urgent regulatory reform to ensure integrity and transparency in the ownership of clubs, including robust and globally-enforceable financial standards and effective financial supervision mechanisms, at both national and international level.
All are key recommendations of ICSS INSIGHT’s Financial Integrity and Transparency in Sport (FITS) global project.
Next spring, we are hosting the second edition of the FITS FORUM. We urge all leaders from the world of sport, government and business to join us in debating the pressing challenges facing financial integrity in sport and creating the pathway to the much-needed reforms.
If we are to usher in a new era of financial integrity and ensure sport’s credibility and future development, the time for action is now! ”
