ICSS – OAS Regional Conference

MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS

THE CROSSROADS OF SECURITY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Sports and sporting events are a positive force in society for socioeconomic development at the national, regional, and international levels. Sporting events often bring together diverse communities and offer a cost-effective, high-impact tool for responding to many development challenges. Furthermore, major sporting events generate legacy opportunities for host countries, cities, and the overall region where they take place.

OAS Regional Summit
In June 2015, The International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) and the Organization of American States (OAS) organised the first Regional Conference to promote multi-sectorial cooperation and secure international commitment at the highest level to enhance the positive socioeconomic impacts of safe and sustainable sporting events in the Americas. The program sought to foster greater communication and collaboration across sectors and to promote an integrated approach that will improve the intersection of sport security and development.

Throughout the programme, ICSS and the OAS highlighted the legacy opportunities offered by major sporting events not only for the host countries, but also for the overall region. The protection of human rights in the sporting context and sports as a tool for development was also examined as key topics.

Attendees included government ministers from OAS Member States as well as representatives from international organisations and the international business community.

This conference will also hosted a gallery exhibition ”noites Do Brazilâ” a project developed by Save the Dream, an initiative of the ICSS, in cooperation with Magnum Photos to capture moments of humanity in sport.
